Since the creation of the MPNR, we faced the challenge of developing a conservation project that would benefit the residents of the La Mesenia village and, in turn, preserve one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.
The first step after the project began in 2008 was to raise awareness among the area's residents about avoiding throwing plastic wrappers and bottles onto the bridle path, also known as the "Camino Real," which connects with San Antonio del Chamí. It also sought to prevent the contamination of the San Juan Antioquía River with garbage and sewage. In a second phase, septic tanks, donated by the foundation, were installed in homes located near the river to prevent water pollution. This measure also had a positive impact on the health of children and adults by preventing them from being exposed to microorganisms that cause gastrointestinal illnesses.

After the pandemic ended, Celsia donated 80 water filters, which were delivered to 78 families in the villages of La Mesenia, El Cañón, Macanas, and La Floresta. These clay filters allow families to obtain drinking water without having to boil it, saving them propane gas and also avoiding the use of firewood.

Approximately a year ago, the possibility of using solar energy to reduce energy costs at the reserve station and in the homes in the neighborhood was raised. Last September, Celsia made another important donation. This donation consists of solar cells and inverters that will allow 20 families in the La Mesenia village to return energy to the EPM grid and achieve net-zero consumption. In early March 2025, the installation of the structures for mounting the solar panels and modern equipment for measuring the energy generated was completed. We hope that EPM will certify the installations during 2025.
